Shaharyar's Nazm: Khwab ka dar band hai...

Shaharyar is a renowned Urdu poet who writes ghazals as well as Nazms. He is considered a poet of modernist stream in Urdu poetry. Read his verse titled 'Khwaab ka dar band hai'.

आज फ़राहम* किया [faraaham=provide]

mere liye raat ne

ek nayaa marhala

niindoN ne khaalii kiyaa
ashkoN se phir bhar diyaa
kaasa merii aaNkh kaa
aur kahaa kaan meN

main.Ne har ek jurm se
tumko barii kar diyaa
main.Ne sadaa ke liye
tumko rihaa kar diyaa

jaao jidhar chaho tum
jaago ki so jaao tum
Khwaab ka dar band hai

Best couplets of Urdu poet Shaharyar

Shaharyar is one of the leading Urdu poets. Here is a selection of some of his famous couplets. It's a random selection of ash'aar:

ummiid se kam chashm-i-khariidaar meN aaye

sabhii ko gham hai samandar ke khushk hone kaa

phir kahiiN Khwaab-o-haqiiqat kaa tasaadum hogaa
phir koii manzil-e-benaam bulaati hai hameN

voh dekh lo, voh samandar khushk hone lagaa
jise thaa daava merii pyaas bujhaane kaa

Shaharyar's ghazal: Zamin teri kashish khinchti rahi...

[saraab=mirage]

kaTegaa dekhiye din jaane kis azaab ke saath
ki aaj dhuup nahiiN niklii aaftaab ke saath

to phir bataao samandar sadaa ko kyuuN sunte
hamaarii pyaas kaa rishta thaa jab saraab ke saath
(saraab=mirage)

baDii ajiib mahak saath le ke aaii hai
nasiim raat basar kii kisii gulaab ke saath

fizaa meN duur tak marhabaa ke naare haiN
guzarne vaale haiN kuchh log yaaN se Khwaab ke saath

zamiiN terii kashish khiiNchtii rahii hamko
gaye zaruur the kuchh duur maahtaab ke saath

baat kam kiijiye, zahaanat ko chhupaate rahiye
ajnabi shahar hai yeh, dost banaate rahiye

dushmanii laakh sahii, khatm na kiijiye rishta
dil mile yaa na mile haath milaate rahiye

ye to chehre ka faqat aks hai tasviir nahiiN
is pe kuchh rang abhi aur chaDhaate rahiye

Gham hai aavaaraa akele meN bhaTak jaataa hai
jis jagah rahiye vahaaN milte milaate rahiye

jaane kab chaaNd bikhar jaaye ghane jangal meN
apne ghar ke dar-o-diivaar sajaate rahiye

Mat kaho aakash me kohra ghana hai...

There are problems all around, and frustrations. How do we cope with these? Here is a well know poem by Dushyant Kumar. Criticism of clandestine operations that straight persons are incapable of, in the last stanza is very beautifully put. Rajiv Krishna Saxena

Soulfull- 'BHARAT EK KHOJ"

(First stanza is in Sanskrit and fades away as the Hindi lyrics start)

[edit] Translation

The lyrics are only in Hindi because the Sanskrit lyrics are sung again in Hindi. The Universe has been generally used for Hindi word Srishti but that is not an accurate translation because Srishti means everything including the Universe and the heavens and the entirety of existence i.e. all-encompassing existence, thus 'all things' is used to refer to Srishti. Note that although it is easy to assume that there is a gender and/or personality associated with the Entity being referred in the lyrics, actually the lyrics go to great length in keeping the language gender and personality neutral. That is why we refer to the Entity using That and It throughout.

Goodness(being) did not exist before all things came to be
Evil(nonbeing) did not exist either
The atmosphere did not exist as well
The sky too was not present
Was anything hidden? Where?
Who had covered it?
At that moment
Unmoving, strong ocean was not there either

Who is the doer of all things?
Is that a doer or non-doer?
Living in the high skies?
Always plays the part of the leader?
Only that knows the truth
Or maybe that does not
No one knows really, No one knows
No one knows really, No one knows

That was the golden womb ever present before all things came
That is the great lord of all the elements
That is the presence through which the land and the skies materializes
Which God like that should we worship by offering ghee?

The skies are lit with its strength
The earth is established with greenery and prosperity
Heavens and Sun are also established
Which God like that should we worship by offering ghee?

It materialized fire in its womb to give birth
There was water here and there and up and below
Out of which only life awoke
Which God like that should we worship by offering ghee?

Om! (Incantation) That maker of all things, that architect of the heavens, our ancestor protect us
That enforcer of truth and dharma, that regulator as mighty as the ocean, protect us
That vastness stretched across all directions, everywhere and in everything
We should keep praying to God like that by offering ghee
We should keep praying to God like that by offering ghee
